That Mr Wake’s given us quite the run-around, hasn’t he? We first heard tell of the man back at E3 2005 – a celebrity pulp author with acute insomnia, cowering in the midst of a spooky Midwestern small-town sandbox.

Half a decade later the sandbox is conspicuous by its absence, with Remedy opting for a linear episodic format redolent of Alone in the Dark, but Alan’s still got insomnia, and his game still looks rather tasty.

Here’s the first teaser for Fallout: New Vegas, straight from Bethesda’s servers to your Pipboy 3000 (or equivalent). Not much to deduce from this, other than that fascist headgear and 50s crooning are still in vogue.

Either somebody’s telling dirty fibs, or this is a clip of Valve’s Half-Life 2 being played with Microsoft’s Project Natal motion-sensing doodad. The quality’s piss-poor, but you can see a chap waving his arms at what looks suspiciously like the lab at Black Mesa East.

Among the big numbers at Spike TV’s Video Game Awards last night was the first Halo: Reach trailer. It’s silly, gritty and melancholy all at once. Classic Halo, in short.

That skull-face helmet is very Army of Two, don’t you think?

What’s red-hot, ash-covered and fragile to the touch? Unshielded flesh after it’s been subject to the attentions of the Blackstorm, a new weapon for Mass Effect 2. The Gamestop ad above also flaunts some tasty Terminus gear. You’ll need to preorder the beggar if you want to get your hands on either.

Face it, this game is going to be great. Even if BioWare makes it extra-tough.

Still, Infinity Ward’s magnum-opus-till-the-next-one has stirred up a fair bit of fuss between unveiling and release. Let’s review the key dates and events with the aid of a few choice video clips…
